The Consortium decided to work on a service learning project to respond to needs arising from the community and to enable students to learn better from their higher education institutions, to participate civically in society, to be democratic and socially responsible citizens. Service Learning combines the needs for improving career guidance and tutoring services with the need to improve the quality of teaching. Service-learning offers a unique opportunity for students to get involved with their communities in a tangible way, by integrating service projects with didactic and learning. Studies indicate that “students evaluating their service-learning courses are more likely than students evaluating other courses to report that the courses promoted interpersonal, community and academic engagement, were academically challenging, and encouraged their continued study at the University.” (Gallini & Moely, 2003).It allows for the integration of learning with practical activity; the complementarity of aims, experiences and activities; the collaboration between higher education institutions and communities; and finally, the critical reflection that arises from theory and is directed towards practical activities.
